Recruitment is an exciting time of year where Publications students begin to share information with potential new staffers! We are excited to meet you and tell you all about our program.
We have put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into building our program over the years. In doing so, we’ve raised our standards and are passionate about creating something special that our alumni and community will treasure for years to come.
For our 23-24 yearbook titled “Now More Than Ever,” we received the prestigious “All-Kansas” award from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association (KSPA) and were rewarded the “Gallery of Excellence” award by our publisher, Walsworth, for producing a high-quality yearbook that ranked in the top 10% of all yearbooks they published. So… We’re kind of a big deal. 😉
Who can join Yearbook?
Students who have taken Photo Imaging and 21st Century Journalism may enroll in Yearbook. If you take both of these classes your freshman year, you can enroll in yearbook as a sophomore!
How much work is it?
We create a 256-page storybook from scratch– So yes, it is a lot of work! We tell the stories that matter the most over the year, and it takes time to collect your interviews, take photos at events, design your page, and write your story. The good news is, if you love to write, take photos, and work with others, you will enjoy every step of the process.
Why should I join?
Yearbook is one of the best things you can do while in high school! Not only does it plug you in with a great staff, but you get all sorts of opportunities to be more involved with happenings at PHS. We are the journalists of the school, and we are always on the lookout for important things to cover in our yearbook. We also cover a lot of fun things, too! Most importantly, we are storytellers. And to tell people’s stories is to honor them, and your part in that becomes your legacy.
Are there leadership opportunities?
YES! Yearbook is a student-run organization, meaning there is an Editor in Chief, a Photo Editor, a Copy Editor, an Ads Editor, and a Mods Editor. There are also roles like Business Manager, Social Media Manager, and Recruitment Manager.
What perks do I get?
Your press pass gets you into events for free when you are there to cover it. There are also opportunities to travel to national conventions (we’ve been to Boston & Saint Louis over the past 2 years) and opportunities to earn recognition for outstanding work in various fields of photojournalism and design through KSPA, JEA, and Walsworth competitions.
